Vaccination for the Elderly
Moon Song-Mi

Abstract
As the number of Korean elderly is expected to increase continuously, the health care for elderly is becoming increasingly important. Immunization is the most effective and cost-beneficial means to prevent infectious diseases in adults as well as in children. However, adult immunization has been beyond the center of attention relatively to children¡¯s immunization in Korea. Especially, vaccine use among elderly is low. Elderly persons are more vulnerable to various infectious diseases and the prevention of these diseases through adequate vaccination is important. Elderly persons have to be recommended to receive vaccinations based on their age, underlying medical conditions, lifestyle, prior vaccinations, and other considerations. In 2012/2014, the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases developed revised guidelines for adult vaccination, which include recommendations for aged group. In this review, we will focus our discussion on importance of vaccination for elderly. And general information, indications, efficacy are reviewed for vaccination of pneumococcal, zoster and influenza.
